A CAF is a tax assistance centre: it helps with ISEE and tax returns. A patronato assists with social security matters and, at authorised offices, immigration procedures.

  1. Choose the service: look for a CAF for ISEE or tax returns; for a residence permit kit, look for an authorised patronato or municipality. The same premises may have separate desks.
  2. Call first. Explain what you need, whether it is a first application or renewal, and ask about appointments, documents and fees.

Where can I get help with the residence permit kit?

The kit contains forms and an envelope used for some residence permit applications. Not every procedure goes through the post office.

What to do, step by step

  1. Before filling it in, tell the patronato the reason for your stay and whether you need a first permit, renewal or conversion, so they can identify the correct procedure.
  2. In the Immigration Portal office search, choose “Patronati” or “Comuni”, then the province and municipality; add a postcode to narrow the results. Call the office you select.
  3. Bring your passport, any previous permit, receipts and documents about the reason for your stay. Ask for the exact checklist for your case.
  4. An authorised patronato or municipality can help complete the application free of charge. For postal applications, take the open envelope to Sportello Amico and keep the receipt and appointment notice. Administrative charges are separate from assistance.

What is ISEE and where can I obtain it?

ISEE describes your household’s financial situation. It is used for many reduced fees and benefits. DSU is the declaration of information used to calculate it.

What to do, step by step

  1. Tell the CAF what you need it for, such as school meals, university or another benefit. The required type of ISEE can differ.
  2. Prepare ID, household members’ tax codes, any registered rental contract, and income, bank account and property information, including assets abroad. Ordinary ISEE generally uses income and assets from two years earlier: 2024 for ISEE 2026. The full checklist depends on your household.
  3. The CAF prepares and submits the DSU. Check the information before signing, obtain a receipt and ask how to receive the ISEE certificate.
  4. The certificate is normally available within 10 working days after the DSU is received. Ask the CAF to explain any missing information or discrepancies.
  5. You can also use the INPS Portale unico ISEE with SPID, CIE or CNS. Getting an ISEE does not automatically submit every benefit application: check the next step for the support you want.

Which documents should I bring?

Prepare a folder for your application. The checklist depends on the procedure: the same documents will not cover every appointment.

What to do, step by step

  1. Start with ID, your tax code if already assigned, address, contact details and letters from the office. Bring originals and any required copies.
  2. For residence procedures, add your passport, visa where required, current permit and receipts. Work, study and family applications need different supporting documents.
  3. For ISEE, also prepare household, income and asset information. Ask your bank or Poste for the balance and annual average balance for the required year. Mention income, accounts and property abroad.
  4. Ask for a written checklist. For foreign documents, ask whether translation or legalisation is needed before paying for it. If something is missing, contact the office and ask how to supply it.

How much does the service cost?

Separate the assistance fee from amounts owed to the public authority. Free assistance does not mean the whole procedure is free.

What to do, step by step

  1. Authorised patronati and municipalities can help complete a permit kit free of charge. Stamp duty, postage and official contributions may still be payable unless an exemption applies.
  2. At CAF offices operating under an INPS agreement, the first DSU/ISEE of the year is free. A later DSU for the same household may have a fee: explain whether it is a correction, a household change or an ISEE corrente and ask which conditions apply.
  3. Before starting, ask for a breakdown of assistance, any membership, taxes and other services. Ask whether membership is compulsory or optional.
  4. Pay through the channels indicated by the organisation. Keep receipts and a copy of the application. No private office can guarantee approval.

How can I check whether my residence permit is ready?

Keep your receipt handy: it contains the reference needed to check progress. Ralumo does not collect your application number.

What to do, step by step

  1. On the Polizia di Stato service, choose a language and enter the 10-character application number or the 12-character insured-mail number on your receipt. Do not use your passport number.
  2. Read the result. “In trattazione” means processing is continuing. Follow the Questura’s collection instructions and any SMS giving the day, time and place.
  3. If the application is not found, check the number and code type. If the problem continues, ask the patronato or Questura for help and bring your receipt.
  4. Before collection, ask which original documents to bring and whether an appointment is required. Prepare your passport, receipt and previous permit if you have one, following the Questura’s instructions; note the address, day and time.
