The outlet Hespress reported that US Republican lawmaker Joe Wilson urged the inclusion of the Polisario Front on the list of foreign terrorist organizations. Concurrently, the member of the House of Representatives requested the application of sanctions against Algeria due to military supplies purchased from Moscow. The stance came following the veto exercised by the Russian Federation regarding a US diplomatic proposal.

Russia's intervention occurred during the work of the United Nations Security Council, where a resolution put forward by the United States on the Sahara dossier was under consideration. According to the newspaper's reconstruction, the text provided for the renewal and reorganization of the MINURSO mission, further identifying the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the sole formal basis for negotiations. The draft had gathered the support of eleven Council members prior to the Russian block.

In his statements published on the X platform and reported by the daily, Wilson challenged Moscow's conduct, accusing it of seeking to maintain a state of instability on the African continent. The lawmaker listed Russia, Algerian authorities, Iran, and the separatist movement supported by Algiers among the parties benefiting from the standoff in the diplomatic arena, reiterating the need for a firm response from Washington's institutions.

The lawmaker's request continues a course of action undertaken previously; in June 2025, Wilson had introduced a bill alongside Democratic colleague Jimmy Panetta on the issue of the separatist movement. The request was then renewed in September 2026 after talks with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, confirming the orientation to call for official restrictions against the Sahrawi counterpart and its regional partners.
