The general director of the Carfil factory in Brasov, Mircea Petru Tantau, explained to the Romanian media outlet HotNews that he had been informed in advance by the security services about potential hostile threats. An initial general warning regarding the companies of the state holding Romarm arrived between February and March, followed earlier in the year by an attempted cyberattack. In August, a new notification indicated the military plant as a probable target, a few weeks before a fire broke out.

The fire occurred on September 14, 2026, inside the Carfil Industrial Parc, a civilian commercial area separated from the military facility. The flames damaged approximately two thousand square meters, including car repair shops, an inspection station, and other businesses, without causing any casualties. The director clarified that the military production lines, located several hundred meters away and guarded by separate security checkpoints, suffered no operational disruptions.

On October 26, the SRI intelligence service linked the action to a sabotage network coordinated by Russia, with regional military and industrial targets. The DIICOT prosecutor's office is investigating three foreign nationals—two Belarusians arrested in Germany and a Ukrainian detained in Poland—for attempted acts of subversion. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador to formally protest, while Moscow's diplomatic mission rejected all accusations, complaining of a lack of evidence.

Following the incident, Carfil management reinforced instructions for security personnel and employees to report suspicious movements, intensifying cooperation with law enforcement and considering drone surveillance. The company manufactures metal components for defense and collaborates on drone programs. According to Tantau, the perpetrators knowingly acted to attract visibility, within a framework of intimidation linked to the conflict in Ukraine.
