Romania’s Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, stated on October 25 that he cannot rule out the introduction of new taxes and duties in 2027. While not desiring an increase in the tax burden, the minister emphasized the urgent need to ensure the country’s financial sustainability, as reported by the Romanian newspaper Ziare.com.
Nazare clarified that for every new program not yet budgeted, it is essential to identify a specific funding source. He specified that political decisions concerning new fiscal measures fall under the purview of the Government and Parliament, with the Ministry of Finance responsible for maintaining economic balance.
The ministry, under his leadership, is committed to establishing principles of security and responsibility, integrating proposals aimed at eliminating waste and preventing financial deviations that have in the past steered the country away from its stated objectives. Such solutions are then presented to the Government for approval.
The minister also warned that financial imbalances entail high costs, translating into higher interest rates. Nazare indicated that this year’s interest payments will exceed 60 billion lei and could reach 70 billion next year, a significant burden for future generations.
