Matteo Salvini has been reconfirmed as federal secretary of the Lega for his fourth mandate, at the extraordinary congress in Milan on October 25, 2026. He obtained 465 votes, equal to 76% of the 611 voters, surpassing challenger Massimo Garavaglia, who received 146 votes (24%). His position will see him leading the party for the next four years, until 2030.
During his speech, Salvini outlined a clear political line, declaring the Lega's intention to bring its position against sending funds to Ukraine to the Council of Ministers. He also presented the party's new symbol, "Italia federale", which will replace the previous wording "Salvini premier". Among other firm positions, he reiterated his rejection of ius scholae and ius soli, and called for the abolition of the European Green Deal.
Massimo Garavaglia, the sole challenger, motivated his candidacy with the aim of reversing the party's negative trend and promoting a more pragmatic and modern Lega, detached from extreme positions. During the congress proceedings, the introduction of a political secretariat composed of a maximum of nine members, with advisory powers, was also approved.
Following his reconfirmation, Salvini expressed his regret for the choice to participate in the Draghi government with the Democratic Party, stating that such an alliance will not be repeated. He also announced an uncompromising approach towards those who do not respect the party's statute. The composition of the new political secretariat will take place within one or two weeks, according to his statements.
