Germany, political maneuvers begin to elect the new federal president
In Germany, the governing coalition has launched consultations to identify the figure who will succeed Frank-Walter Steinmeier in the federal presidency in 2027. With a guaranteed majority in the Federal Convention, the Christian Democratic Union leads the talks, while several prominent figures emerge, notably the president of the Bavarian parliament Ilse Aigner.

Germany is preparing for an institutional turnover at the top of the state, in view of the conclusion of the second term of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is no longer eligible for re-election. As reported by the broadcaster Deutsche Welle, the term will end at the beginning of 2027, with the formal expiration scheduled for March nineteen. Chancellor Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union, is tasked with proposing the main candidate for the coalition he leads alongside the Social Democrats and the CSU.
The election takes place every five years through the Federal Convention, composed of the six hundred and thirty members of the Bundestag and an equal number of delegates designated by the parliaments of the Länder. The required quorum exceeds six hundred and thirty-one votes, and the agreement among the Christian Democratic Union, its Bavarian sister party, and the Social Democratic Party guarantees on paper a solid majority of six hundred and eighty-two votes, making the choice of the name agreed upon among the coalition parties decisive.
Among the most credited figures, Ilse Aigner stands out, a member of the CSU and president of the Bavarian regional parliament, strengthened by a past as a federal minister and by the appreciation expressed by parties across the political spectrum. Within Merz's party, Julia Klöckner, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, Karin Prien, and the Minister-President of Hesse Boris Rhein are also being evaluated. The prospect of Ines Claus, which circulated recently, was instead rejected by the chancellor.
Sources close to the executive indicate that the process will gain momentum with the leadership meetings on November nine, preceded by internal discussions and formal exchanges with the Social Democrats and the Greens. In a parliamentary democracy where the head of state exercises crucial moral and constitutional authority during times of crisis, the parties are aiming for a unifying figure who guarantees institutional stability for the country.
