The Court of Cassation rejected the appeals against the decree of the Milan Court of Appeal which orders the shutdown of the hot area of the ex Ilva of Taranto. The decision, filed today after the hearing on October 20, makes the provision definitive. The appeals had been filed by the companies Ilva and Acciaierie d’Italia Spa-Acciaierie d’Italia Holding.
This definitive ruling obliges ex Ilva to shut down the blast furnaces and cease hot production. The legal deadline of December 15, 2026, foreseen for this operation, was conditional on today's decision of the Supreme Court. The commissioners will now have to establish the technical details of the shutdown, considered irreversible once implemented, as reported by RaiNews.
The decree of the Milan Court of Appeal dates back to July 27, granting ninety days to the company for compliance, and was confirmed in two hearings, on September 9 and 30. The central motivations cited damages to human health, caused by dust emissions into the atmosphere and the presence of asbestos in the blast furnaces.
The citizens of Taranto filed counter-appeals in support of the Milan judges' provision, participating in a long judicial process. This took place between the Milan court, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the Court of Appeal, concluding with today's decision of the Court of Cassation in Rome.
