The Vatican is preparing for a significant institutional transition with the official inauguration, scheduled for Sunday, November 1, of the new prefect of the Dicastery for Communication. As reported by the news outlet RaiNews, journalist and manager Maria Montserrat Alvarado will take the reins of the body, succeeding Paolo Ruffini, who concludes his mandate upon reaching retirement.

Born in Mexico City in 1986 and previously at the operational helm of EWTN News, the new prefect had been designated by the Pontiff last June 2. The appointment establishes a historical precedent for the Roman Curia, as Alvarado represents the first lay female figure to receive the leadership of a dicastery at the Holy See.

In a statement given to the broadcaster EWTN News In Depth, the executive expressed her awareness of the considerable responsibility of the role. She emphasized her commitment to operating in full harmony with papal directives, highlighting her intention not to impose a personal vision, but rather to faithfully welcome and implement the pastoral mandate entrusted to her to spread the ecclesial message.

The entity was established by Pope Francis in 2015 during the process of curial reform and manages the entire Vatican media apparatus. Its remit includes Vatican News, Vatican Radio, L'Osservatore Romano, the Press Office, the Film Library, the Printing Press, and publishing activities, integrating technical management with theological reflection.
