The Chinese Foreign Ministry firmly rejected media reports concerning an alleged intelligence operation aimed at targeting Nvidia chief Jensen Huang. As reported by the broadcaster Euronews, Beijing's diplomatic spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, dismissed the reconstructions, calling them entirely baseless speculation aimed at discrediting the Asian country's international image.
The tensions stem from a US journalistic investigation according to which Washington's intelligence services reportedly identified an executive at a Singapore-based data center, identified as Alice Huang or Huang Le. The woman, an employee of the company Megaspeed, was reportedly monitored over fears of an illicit transfer of advanced microchips to China and for her contacts with the leadership of the US group.
In response to the reported news, an Nvidia spokesperson explained that the relations between the CEO and the executive fell within standard business practices. The company also clarified that regional cloud service customers receive only routine corporate information, without any access to critical industrial secrets, noting that smuggling suspicions regarding the Asian firm had already been denied the previous year.
The affair comes within the complex technological and geopolitical competition between the United States and China in the development of artificial intelligence systems. Despite briefings received by the US administration, President Donald Trump chose not to intervene, keeping channels of bilateral discussion with the Chinese counterpart open on issues of technology regulation ahead of future diplomatic summits.
