Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the introduction of personalized car license plates in the 2027 financial budget. Presenting the budget outline, Meloni described the measure as a “splash of color,” emphasizing how Italians will be able to express their creativity, incurring a cost. The announcement, reported by la Repubblica, took place on October 28, 2026.

This possibility, although already foreseen by the Highway Code, had never been implemented due to the absence of specific regulations. The government now intends to make the option operational, allowing vehicle owners to choose personalized alphanumeric combinations, upon payment of the associated charges.

The proposal has drawn criticism from the 5 Star Movement. According to reports from la Repubblica, Vice President Mario Turco sharply attacked the executive, accusing it of wanting to raise funds from citizens with this initiative. Turco described the Meloni government's budget as a “meager package,” lacking concrete ideas and projects.

The introduction of personalized license plates is part of the broader 2027 financial budget. This economic plan outlined by the government also includes other tax changes, such as IRPEF (personal income tax) and flat tax for self-employed individuals, indicating the directions of national economic policy.
