According to provisional data released by Istat and reported by the editorial staff of RaiNews, in October 2026 the consumer price index for the entire community recorded an increase of 0.9% on the previous month and 5.4% on a year-on-year basis. The recorded level brings the inflation rate back to the values observed in August 2023, while the harmonised European parameter stood at 5.6%.

Determining the growth in prices was primarily the energy sector, with regulated tariffs rising to 59.5% compared to the previous 25.8% and unregulated goods increasing to 29.4%. Unprocessed food also accelerated, reaching 7.5%, as did transport services, while the shopping cart basket shifted to an increase of 2.5%. Core inflation reached 2.0%.

On the economic growth front, gross domestic product in the third quarter of 2026 remained unchanged on a quarter-on-quarter level, while recording a progress of 0.8% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The statistical institute noted an increase in value added in agriculture and services, contrasted by a contraction in the industrial sector, with negative net foreign demand.

In September 2026, contractual hourly wages increased by 2.5% on an annual basis, confirming for the second consecutive quarter a dynamic lower than inflation. Speaking at World Savings Day, Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti defined the sharp rise in prices as a direct consequence of the impact of wars on global energy raw materials.
