Morocco aims to exceed 24 billion cubic meters of dam storage capacity by the end of 2027. This objective is stated in the explanatory memorandum of the 2027 finance bill project. As reported by Hespress, this strategy is aimed at strengthening water security, which is fundamental for the population and economic development.

Since 2020, eight large dams have been completed in Morocco, adding 1.89 billion cubic meters of capacity. Five additional dams have started filling, contributing 746 million cubic meters and bringing the combined capacity to approximately 2.64 billion cubic meters.

Fourteen large dams and six medium-sized ones are under construction, with a new major dam and the expansion of an existing one planned for 2027. The 2022-2027 program for 155 small and hillside dams has completed 24 works, with 32 underway.

Between 2020 and 2025, 5,059 exploratory wells were drilled to evaluate aquifers. Water transfer projects connect the Oued El Makhazine-Dar Khrofa dams for Tangier and Sebou-Bouregreg for Rabat and Casablanca. The government implements quality monitoring and reviews water regulations.
