A small agricultural center in the province of Caserta has ended up at the center of national attention due to an exceptional flow of bets on digital platforms. As reported by the newspaper la Repubblica, during 2025 the municipality of Baia e Latina recorded about one hundred and fifty million euros in online bets, a record figure that emerged from a study conducted by Cgil, Federconsumatori, and the Isscon Foundation.
The statistical datum appeared disproportionate compared to the two thousand residents, suggesting a fictitious average of over one hundred thousand euros per adult. Almost the entire volume, about ninety-six percent, went through the betting exchange mechanism. In this specific system, bettors face each other directly on an intermediary platform that retains an operating commission.
Questioned on the matter, the Ministry of Economy and Finance clarified in a written note that the actual average of the town complies with national parameters. The ministry explained that the record figure is entirely linked to the activities of a single registered gaming account, reiterating that all transactions are traceable and completely legitimate.
The mayor Giuseppe Di Cerbo expressed skepticism regarding the local origin of the funds, describing the community as extraneous to such financial means. Various voices from the civic and political arena are urging further checks by supervisory authorities, highlighting the need for transparency in gaming account identification systems.
