German police are investigating the captain of the Mein Schiff 3, a cruise ship that collided with two container ships in the port of Bremerhaven on Sunday evening. The incident caused millions in damages and the cancellation of a twenty-day cruise to the Canary Islands. Deutsche Welle reports that authorities are evaluating a possible breach of duty of care by the captain.

The episode occurred during the departure of the Mein Schiff 3, assisted by tugboats. A gust of wind pushed the ship, with 2,428 passengers and 922 crew, against the moored cargo ships. No injuries or water ingress. RTL reported the questioning of the captains of the three ships involved in the hours following the event.

Significant damages: the larger container ship suffered an opening on its side with deformations. The Mein Schiff 3 reported damage to lifeboats and deck; the smaller one minor damage. All damages were above the waterline. After the impact, the cruise ship returned to the terminal for inspections.

Experts confirmed the need for shipyard repairs, as declared by the operator TUI Cruises. The company defined the cancellation of the cruise as the «only responsible decision» for safety. It remains uncertain whether other trips planned for this year will be able to take place. The incident did not interrupt general port traffic.
