Basilicata has formalized a significant regional protocol to intensify the security of its banks and post offices. The main objective of this initiative is to strengthen crime prevention and combat strategies, with particular attention to safeguarding ATMs, combating cyber fraud, and protecting citizens from scams.
The agreement was signed on 23 October 2026 at the Potenza Prefecture, as part of the XVIII Regional Conference of Public Security Authorities, chaired by Prefect Michele Campanaro. The signatories include the Prefects of Potenza, Michele Campanaro, and Matera, Maria Carolina Ippolito, along with the top management of the Italian Banking Association (ABI) and Poste Italiane. The agreement extends security cooperation, already consolidated with the banking sector (which has grown from 16 to 18 member institutions), to the postal sector as well.
One of the central innovations introduced by the protocol is the creation, at the Prefectures of Potenza and Matera, of the 'Safe Territories' Observatories. These bodies have been designed to optimize the exchange of data and intelligence among public entities, law enforcement agencies, and industry professionals. Their primary purpose will be to monitor the evolution of criminal phenomena and ensure effective coordination of prevention actions.
The text of the agreement also outlines a series of practical interventions. Video surveillance will be strengthened, and the protection of ATMs, a frequent target of criminal acts, will be improved. Specific emphasis will be placed on defense against cyber threats, a continuously evolving and increasingly important area. Finally, awareness campaigns aimed at citizens will be conducted, with a focus on preventing scams, especially to protect the most vulnerable segments of the population, such as the elderly.
This prevention strategy, conceived to be shared at a regional level, aims to create a united front against crime. The expected outcome is increased security for banking and postal operators, greater protection for customers, and, in general, an improvement in the usability of financial and postal services for all residents in Basilicata.
